What Size HDTV Is Right For My Room

[ 0 ] April 5, 2010 |

I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but the viewing rules for standard televisions are that you could be comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size. With the new HDTVs, resolution is better, so you can sit closer to a larger TV and you won’t notice the pixels. So the rule for the HDTV is that you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size for the best experience.

So for the minimum size HDTV you would divide your viewing distance by 3, for the maximum size you would divide your viewing distance by 1.5. So if you’re seated 4 feet away from your television the minimum size would be 19 inches the maximum size would be 32. If your 8 feet away from your television the minimum size would be 32 inches and a max would be 63 if you’re 6 feet away the minimum size would be 26 inches and max size would be 46 inches.

If you have a home theater and you get to sit 14 feet away from the television you would need at least a 52 inch screen and you could go all way up to 112 inch for maximum viewing comfort. Most people usually sit 6 to 8 feet away from their television, so the 32 is a nice size and you could go up to 46 or even 63 if you are 8 feet away.

It still depends upon personal preference but these are just some size guidelines that can help you choose the best TV for your viewing experience. With today’s new models with all the functions of Internet TV HDTV and even 3-D viewing you have a lot of options to choose from and there is no point in being confused by your options or paying extra when a smaller TV would serve your functions better.
